On Page Optimization
Links are extremely important, but more than that, good old fashioned on-page Search Engine Optimization (SEO) still has its place in search engine algorithms. But what exactly is on-page SEO? It refers to the things one can do to a HTML document in order to influence its relevance to search engines. You may be familiar with META tags for example. Some META tags were created to let the author assign keywords and a description to a document, and they are still in use today, although to most search engines they have much less importance than they once did in the good old days.
Many on-page factors are used by search engines to try to determine the topic and relevance of a page. For example, the TITLE tag is very important. Time shold be spent to write a proper TITLE tag in order to compete in the search engines.
There are dozens of such elements inside a document that one must pay attention to in order to gain the competitive edge that is required to make it to the top of the search engines rankings or SERP ( Search Engine Results Pages.)
Search Engine Optimizers must pay attention to things like keyword density, keyword repetition, and keyword proximity. In order to do this, the content of a website will always need to be tweaked, sometimes slightly, often quite drastically. This work is difficult, and typically requires a lot of collaboration from the client.
We are really only experts at making documents look good to search engines. The client know its business and so his input is as important to succeed as our efforts.
And to put the final nail in the coffin: Google, Yahoo! and MSN use on-page factors in very different ways.
The challenge is to write or re-write documents that will
- maintain their specific message and quality to the site visitor
- rank at the top on all 3 major search engines
- use as little compromise on design as possible
- not resort to unethical or questionable short-term tactics.
